My coaching practice spans life, career, and performance.

I help my clients — CEOs, founders, professionals, athletes — gain clarity, craft a vision for the future, and build the habits and skills they need to make that vision a reality.

My approach is informed by seven years in the Army Special Forces, three years at an elite Silicon Valley VC firm, leadership training at Stanford business school, over a decade of intensive meditation practice, and a lifetime of curiosity about everything from neuroscience to evolutionary psychology.

    • Craft a vision of the future to better understand who you want to be

    • Build habits and systems that will help you make that vision a reality

    • Improve your understanding of how your mind works and how it interacts with the outside world

    • Learn to skillfully handle the challenges that arise in your life and career and treat them as opportunities for growth

    • Analyze, synthesize, and integrate the often conflicting advice and information we receive from other people and sources

    • Develop small-scale, low-cost experiments to test hypotheses about new behaviors and new directions in your career and life

During sessions, we move seamlessly between these activities, focusing on whatever is most important at the moment while always keeping the big picture in mind.

You’ll spend most of the time talking, while I’ll ask probing questions, guide the flow of the conversation, listen carefully to what you say, and reflect back to you what I hear.

When I listen, I don’t just listen with my ears. I also read your tone of voice, body language, and facial expressions so I can get a sense of your overall sense of enthusiasm and excitement.

My approach is gradual. You’ll steadily move outside of your comfort zone to ensure sustainable personal growth. The cumulative effect of small, consistent changes over time is transformational.

 Special programs

  • I help veterans transition out of the military and build a fulfilling, meaningful life outside of the military.

  • My approach for CEOs and founders combines elements of life, career, and performance coaching to account for the uniquely demanding nature of the role.

In sessions, we’ll toggle between high-level strategy and short-term tactics, using practical challenges at work as case studies.

    Examples of high-level strategy include:

    • Clarifying your role as CEO

    • Defining your leadership style

    • Crafting a long-term vision for the company

    • Attracting top talent and building a high-performing culture

    Examples of short-term tactics include:

    • Hiring and firing

    • Communicating clearly and directly

    • Fundraising and managing investors

    • Managing interpersonal conflict among employees and cofounders

  • I help scientists translate their work into a business concept and then build the mental habits to make the transition from scientist to entrepreneur.

Who I am

My life has been about testing limits, whether through the physical and emotional rigor of the Army Special Forces, the relentless intellectual grind of academia, the spiritual intensity of Zen temples, or the fast-paced and hyper-competitive world Silicon Valley.

Through those experiences, I've learned invaluable lessons about the power of the mind and what it takes to thrive in life and career.

  • As a Green Beret, I learned how to make good decisions under extreme physical and mental stress.

  • At Stanford GSB, I learned best practices for building strong, high-performing teams.

  • As Chief of Staff at an elite Silicon Valley VC firm, I learned how investors think and what it takes to get a high-growth startup off the ground.

  • Through thousands of hours of meditation, I learned how our emotions drive our thoughts and behaviors and how to face any challenge with clarity and courage.

  • Most importantly, through all of my experiences, I've learned that while in many ways we're all the same, in other ways we couldn't be more different.

It was while working with a coach that I first got in touch with my own unique strengths, my own vision of the future, and an unshakeable confidence to chart my own course.

After that, I knew that I wanted to help unlock other people too. Now, my mission in life is to share the lessons that I’ve learned with others so that they can discover who they are and live more satisfying and meaningful lives.

FAQs

  • We’ll discuss pricing during a discovery call. Quality coaching should be available to everyone, so I offer lower rates for students, military veterans, and other clients in extraordinary circumstances. Whatever the rate, it will be worth every penny.

  • Typically, I recommend clients start with twelve sessions. That’s enough time to get to know you, develop a plan of action, and get you on track to implement it.

After that, some clients choose to go out on their own. They’re always welcome to come back when new challenges and opportunities for growth arise.

Other clients choose to keep going indefinitely. This is the best way to stay accountable and ensure that the growth never stops.

  • My clients are committed to building more fulfilling and meaningful lives and careers. My approach is direct and rigorous, so you’ll need courage to go deep, strong motivation to change, and trust in the process.

  • I don’t guarantee particular outcomes, like a $1B valuation or a speedy promotion. This isn’t about short-term hacks or gimmicks. It’s about deep, long-term change.

We’ll spend almost as much time together formulating the right goals as we do moving towards them. If you lean into the process, I guarantee you will grow more than you thought possible and come out of it with a clear vision of who you are and where you’re headed.

  • Yes, I teach some clients basic breathing and meditation techniques, with an emphasis on application to the coaching process and the challenges that they face in their lives and careers.

For clients who want to go deeper, I have a wealth of knowledge about the pros and cons of different approaches and can help you find one that works for you.

  • Yes. Usually this starts with a one on one engagement, during which we can discuss how group coaching could benefit your team or company.

In the fall, we’re launching a meditation course geared towards the coaching process. Stay tuned for announcements about more courses, workshops, and retreats available to a wider audience.

  • Yes. Coaching and therapy complement each other well. In both, you’ll develop a better understanding of how your mind works. In therapy, the focus is often backward looking i.e. how did you become who you are? In coaching, the focus is usually forward looking i.e. knowing what you know about who you are, how can you make better decisions about your life and career? How can you build new habits and skills to become the person you want to be?

  • No. Most engagements bias towards one type based on the client’s situation, but everything in our life is interrelated, so most engagement blend elements of life, career, and performance coaching.

I always strive to keep your goals nested. In other words, performance goals should support your career goals, and career goals should support a larger vision of your life.

  • Glad you asked! I answer this questions in my first Substack post.
